How often should I clean my jewelry?
Professional cleanings are recommended at least twice a year and are always done free-of-charge. We encourage you to bring your jewelry back to us for servicing. Our staff is knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of jewelry care, including cleaning gemstones, restringing pearls and all aspects of repair and maintenance.

Why should I shop at a independent jeweler instead of a large chain or department store?
There is nothing wrong with purchasing jewelry from a mass merchandiser as long as you understand what you are purchasing. Most savvy shoppers know many independent jewelers carry competitively priced products and understand their customers. Individual attention and product knowledge is crucial. Many independent jewelers have a full service approach and can handle everything from general repair work to building you the perfect engagement ring. At Charles Fine Jewelry, we have a state-of-the-art shop and our intention is to build a legacy of integrity and trust with our clients.

How much do I need to spend on an engagement ring?
This is completely a personal opinion. No one knows your financial situation better than you do. We believe your budget is your decision and we’re happy to work with you whatever your comfort zone. Many people have heard the “Two-Months Salary Guideline”. That is just what it states, a guide.

What if I don’t know what style of engagment ring to buy?
The most classic thing to do is buy a solitaire diamond on a classic Tiffany style band. That way you can present her with a diamond and choose a day to shop together for a bridal set or other mounting. If you want to present her with an engagement ring but don’t know her style, start early by playing “private eye” of sorts. Pay attention to what she wears. Is it white or yellow gold? Are her styles classic and simple or bold and trendy? Does she point out things she sees in magazines or on her friends? Last but not least, trust your gut and get advice from your jeweler.

Does Charles Fine Jewelry have a diamond upgrade program?
Yes. We will be glad to trade your diamond towards a new, larger stone, regardless of where it was purchased. Contact us for details.

Why is my white gold turning yellow?
Pure gold in its raw 24K state comes out of the ground yellow. Whitening alloys are added to give white gold its signature color. (For example, in a 14k gold ring, 14 parts are gold and 8 parts are added alloy). Over time, white gold can “warm up” and take on a slightly yellow tinge. Periodic coatings of rhodium, a white metal from the platinum family, will revive the original bright white of your white gold jewelry. Remember, if you purchased your white gold jewelry from Charles Fine Jewelry, we offer a complimentary free rhodium plating service and discounted price for any future rhodium plating.

Why is platinum so expensive?
Platinum is rare, actually 30 times rarer than gold. Platinum jewelry’s density and weight make it more durable than other metals. Platinum does not wear away and holds stones firmly and securely. Like all precious metals, platinum scratches. However, the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost.
